Franz Schubert – Forellenquintett; Scherzo, Presto (3)

Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) Klavierquintett A-Dur “Die Forelle” D 667 Frank Braley, Piano Renaud Capuçon, Violine Gérard Caussé, Viola Gautier Capuçon, Cello Alois Posch, Kontrabass “Oh, the Trout,” says Nicholas, sighing. How sweet. All that tedious charm. I hate the Trout. It\’s so county” “Fuck you, Nicholas,” says Piers. “Yes!” says Nicholas, brightening up. “I hate it. I loathe it. It makes me ill. It\’s so kitsch. It knows exactly what the right moves are and it makes them all. It\’s light and it\’s trite. I\’m astonished that anyone still plays it. No, on second thoughts I\’m NOT astonished. Some people should have their ears tested. Actually, Piers, do you know, your ears are far too big. Well, as I was saying, I\’m not a snob – I like a lot of light music – but…” Piers, livid, pours a glass of warm punch on his host\’s head. Vikram Seth, in An Equal Music

Help choosing piano repertoire? I’m choosing music for MTNA for next fall – the requirements are 2 different time periods (which I already have, but I prefer at least 3), plus a concerto movement. I have a 25 minute limit, not including the concerto. The pieces I have chosen so far are:Muzio Clementi – Sonata in B minor, Op. 40, No. 2, first movement (1802)Franz Schubert – Impromptu in F minor, Op. 142, No. 1 (1827)Charles T. Griffes – Scherzo (from Fantasy pieces) Op. 6, No. 3 (1915)And the concerto is the second movement of Ravel’s G major piano concerto.I need one more piece, preferably around 5 minutes long? Either baroque, late romantic, or later 20th century. I’ve been thinking about Brahms, possibly. Any suggestions?

Which piece should I learn first from this classical piano book? I recently bought a book with various piano classics. I want to start learning some of these pieces, but I am not sure where to start. I’m not familiar with a number of them, so in your opinion which is your favorite/the overall best piece. Like which one is most beautiful, sounds impressive, is well known, etc.Bach:Invention No. 1Invention No. 4Invention No. 6Invention No. 8Invention No. 13Brahms:Waltz Op. 39, No. 4Waltz Op. 39, No. 11Chopin:Mazurka Op. 67, No. 2Nocturne in E-Flat Major Op. 9, No. 2Prelude Op. 28, No. 15Valse Op. 64, No. 2Debussy:First ArabesqueMendelssohn:Venetian Boat Song Op. 19, No. 6The Fleecy Cloud Op. 53, No. 2Mozart:Sonata (K. 283)Scarlatti:Sonata (K. 9, L413)Schubert:Moment Musicale Op. 94, No. 3Valse Sentimentale Op. 50, No. 13Waltz Op. 18, No. 6Waltz Op. 33, No. 14Waltz Op. 33, No. 15Schumann:Traumerei Op. 15, No. 7Sorry that’s a lot. i think you should do a waltz. i’ve been playing piano for 7 years and waltz’s have always been my favorites. they are normally slow and pretty. and normally easy to learn

The Schubert… All of it! It’s the best!Also these…Traumerei Op. 15, No. 7Mazurka Op. 67, No. 2Sonata (K. 9, L413)Waltz Op. 39, No. 4Waltz Op. 39, No. 11The Bach’s not bad either…

i would go with mozart’s sonata… it’s wicked pretty i don’t know if it’s well known or not… but mozart is a popular composer. My other favorites would be bach – invention # 13. If you wanna hear any of the songs in the book just youtube them!

Definitely go for the Schubert pieces. My favorite composer.Moment Musicale Op. 94, No. 3 is very fun and relatively easy to play. Here is Horowitz playing the piece:youtube.com/watch?v=o9Ak7Tk9B3sThe waltz are also very fun and beautiful

I would definitely do a Bach : ) Specifically Invention No. 13 (that’s my favorite invention of them all).

From personal experience I can say that the Chopin’s Valse Op. 64 No. 2, Mazurka Op. 67 No. 2, and Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 were very fun to learn. If I had to rank them in order of difficulty from easy to hard I would say:Mazurka < Nocturne < Waltz. The mazurka is pretty short and there are lots of repetitions in it. It took me about a day to get it memorized. The nocturne was fairly challenging because the chords didn't really have any patterns, so it was a little more difficult to memorize. Finally the Valse because of the "Piu Mosso" pages, that takes some practice to get your hand used to the movement so you can play it fast. I had the most fun learning and playing the Waltz :D.Take care, have fun, and good luck!

They all sound so lovely! I would suggest either one of the Brahms Waltz, or the Schubert. You should go onto YouTube and listen to a few to see which you like best 🙂

Schumann: Träumerei (Reverie – Op.15 No.7)

Title: Träumerei (Reverie – Op.15 No.7) Composer: Robert Schumann (1810-1856) Piano: Yamaha Arius YDP-160 My rendition of Schumann\’s Träumerei (Reverie – Op.15, n.7) played on a Yamaha Arius YDP-160. This has to be one of my favorite romantic pieces. One of the most famous piano pieces ever written. It\’s very simple but very touching and very romantic. Did a few mistakes 😦 Constructive comments are appreciated! Please leave suggestions on how I can improve 😀

Sonate No.18 – Mozart

29 Aug

Claudio Arrau plays Mozart Sonata No.18 in D, K.576 (I)

1941 recording. ~~~ Last sonata of Mozart, No.18 in D major, K.576, composed in 1789, shortly after the composer\’s return from an unsuccessful concert tour of Potsdam, Leipzig, Berlin and first published in February 1805 in Vienna. The sonata has sometimes been given the nicknames of “Trumpet” or “Hunt”. It is widely accepted that K.576 is the most difficult of Mozart sonatas. The problems come not in the sprightly thematic material, but in its thoroughly contrapuntal treatment, perhaps inspired by Mozart\’s visit to Leipzig and his re-acquaintance with the masterpieces of Bach. Artur Schnabel stated, “D-major sonata is among the most difficult to play, not only technically, but in re-creating that strange blend of joyous playfulness underscored by something far more disturbing…” ~~~ PART I : – Allegro PART II : youtube.com – Adagio – Allegretto ~
